CHILDREN FIRST ROUNDTABLE HONOURS THE ART GALLERY OF
SUDBURY FOR BRINGING ART EDUCATION TO LOCAL CHILDREN |
|
The Mayor and Council’s Children First Roundtable paid tribute to the
Art Gallery of Sudbury, today, for initiatives that have enhanced the
lives of local children. Roundtable Co-Chairs Councillor Louise Portelance
and Janet Gasparini presented the Art Gallery with a certificate of
recognition for its “Art on the Go” educational program.
“We are proud and pleased to recognize the Art Gallery of Sudbury as an
important cultural resource for the children in our community,” said
Greater Sudbury Mayor Jim Gordon. “The Gallery’s innovative
educational programs have made art much more accessible to our children
and have opened the doors to a larger world of artistic pursuits.”
The Art Gallery’s “Art on the Go” program was launched earlier this
year and involved ten schools in the City of Greater Sudbury. Each school
received a specially designed exhibition of artwork from the Gallery’s
permanent collection for public display. Gallery staff worked with
teachers to incorporate the exhibitions into regular classroom activities.
“Art on the Go” recently received the prestigious Educators’ Award
from the Ontario Association of Art Galleries for its important
contribution to art education. Other initiatives by the Art Gallery of
Sudbury provide instruction to young artists and a forum in which to
display their work.
“We want to acknowledge the people and groups who display outstanding
effort and success in putting children first in the City of Greater
Sudbury,” said Sally Spence, Chair of the Public Recognition Committee
for the Children First Roundtable. Each month before the Roundtable’s
regular meeting, a featured nominee is recognized for outstanding
achievement. |
