MAYOR AND COUNCIL’S “CHILDREN FIRST” ROUNDTABLE
HONOURS
DAN GAREAU |
|
The Mayor and Council’s “Children First” Roundtable today
recognized the outstanding contribution of volunteer Dan Gareau to the
lives of Greater Sudbury children. Roundtable Co-Chairs Louise Portelance
and
Janet Gasparini honoured Dan on behalf of Mayor Jim Gordon prior to the
Roundtable’s regular monthly meeting. Mayor Gordon commented: “Dan is
a wonderful example of someone who gives to the community by making a
positive and lasting contribution to the lives of children.”
Dan Gareau has volunteered at the Children’s Treatment Centre two days a
week for three years. The Children’s Treatment Centre helps children
with disabilities reach their potential through therapy programs. Dan
assists the children with classroom activities, takes them to group
therapy, and acts as a resource for staff. Dan says he got involved
because he “has a soft spot for kids with disabilities. They are so
courageous, and should be admired for the way they cope.” How do the
children relate to him? Dan says, “Many children
become very attached to me, as I am to them. I find it easy to be
comfortable with them, and they seem to feel the same.” The reward, he
says, is knowing that his work is appreciated, and that the children
he’s got to know continue to do well after they leave the Centre.
Sally Spence, Chair of the Public Recognition Committee for the
‘Children First’ Roundtable, says Dan is the first of many people to
be honoured. “We want to acknowledge and express sincere appreciation to
individuals, businesses and organizations that display an outstanding
effort and success in putting Children First.” Each month before the
Roundtable’s regular meeting, an award will be made. Photos of those
featured will be displayed on a “Wall of Fame” in the foyer of Tom
Davies Square.
