Mayor Jim Gordon today challenged more Sudbury women to seek office in
the November 10 municipal elections. So far, only eight women are running
for a seat on Council or the Mayor's chair, compared to 47 men. The
deadline to register to seek municipal office is Friday at 5 pm.
"Women represent 51% of our population, but they aren't equitably
represented on City Council," said the Mayor. Currently, one woman,
Deputy Mayor Louise Portelance, sits on Council.
"Is this the way Sudbury women want things to continue? We have
many able female leaders in this community, and we need women's abilities,
ethics and moral sense at the Council table," Mayor Gordon said.
"We need more of a gender balance on Council, so that women's
priorities can have a greater voice in this community," said the
Mayor. "Council deals with many issues that have a direct impact on
the lives of our citizens."
