The Mayor and Council’s Children First Roundtable has released a
"Children First Report Card" to measure the progress of children
in the community during the year 2002.
"The Children First Roundtable has worked very hard to prepare the
first comprehensive portrait of children in the City of Greater
Sudbury," said Mayor Jim Gordon. "Congratulations are extended
to all members of the Children First Roundtable, to the Research
Subcommittee and to Chair Harsh Nath on the release of this worthwhile
report."
The 2002 Children First Report Card for the City of Greater Sudbury
measures community success at meeting the goals set out in the Children
First Charter. The report looks at such issues as children’s nutrition,
access to recreation, health and community supports.
"This report will be updated periodically and it will be a useful
tool for measuring the progress of our children," said Ward 3
Councillor and Roundtable Co-Chair Louise Portelance. "We hope the
Report Card will be an inspiration for the community to take further
action on behalf of our children."
"The efforts of government, community agencies, families and
individuals are reflected in this Report Card," said Roundtable
Co-Chair and Executive Director of the Social Planning Council of Greater
Sudbury Janet Gasparini. "We invite citizens to read and use the data
contained in this report to effect concrete and positive change for all
our community’s children."
The Mayor and Council’s Children First Roundtable was created to advise
the Mayor and Members of Council on children’s issues and to take a
leadership role in promoting efforts in the community which put children
first.
The goals of the Roundtable are: to act as a support to the Mayor and
Council on matters relating to children, to encourage and promote the
City’s efforts to put children first, to ensure that information that
measures the City’s progress in becoming child friendly is collected and
disseminated, and to support strategies that foster and promote the
City’s capacity to support children and families.
