Fraser
Institute Report On Schools Demonstrates The Realities
of the Business of Education
The Fraser Institute, one of Canada's leading
public policy think-tanks, released its Annual Report
Card on Ontario's Elementary Schools 2010 on March 7,
2010. “The report card is the only easily accessible,
objective tool that helps parents assess the performance
of their child’s school,” said Peter Cowley, Fraser
Institute director of school performance studies.
The Report Card on Ontario’s Elementary Schools
2010 rates 2,742 English and French, public, and
Catholic elementary schools from across Ontario based on
nine key indicators derived from province wide tests of
reading, writing, and mathematics skills administered by
the province’s Education Quality and Accountability
Office (EQAO). A number of private schools are also
included.

Instant
Access To Marks Over The Internet May Lead to A Whole
New Way of Reporting Student Evaluation
All parents of high school students with the
Rainbow District School Board will be able to get
instant access to their child's mid-term and final marks
as well as their attendance record over the internet.
While this may seem at first like an interesting and
innovative use of technology, it may very well be a sign
of things to come with respect to reporting student
evaluation.

Could
A Continuous Online Progress Report Card Be Coming Soon?
The introduction of a "Fall Progress Report
Card" which simply reports the progress of a
student in all subject areas instead of assigning marks
or grades may be the next step in the evolution of
teacher - parent communications that will result in the
creation of a "Continuous Online Progress Report
Card" in the near future.

Africentric
Alternative School
Debate In Toronto
May Lead To A New
Organizational Model For High Schools
The
Toronto District School Board decided to open an Africentric
school under its jurisdiction in time for the 2009-2010 school year. The
decision has generated a great deal of debate in that city with critics
citing that the policy will promote segregation.

CONCERNS ABOUT ADHD
A
young mother who we will call Samantha (not her real name) came to my
office the other day and started the conversation with the following: “I
just spoke to my 8 year old son’s teacher. She told me that she thinks
he should be tested for ADHD because of the difficulty he is having
concentrating in class. I don’t want him to be labeled at such a young
age, but I don’t want him to fail his year either. Can you help me?”

MATH ANXIETY IS REAL
A
father and his son came to see me the other day looking for a tutor. He
said, “My son is in Grade 5 and he is having a lot of trouble with math.
I was always terrible in math and hated it when I was in school, so I
guess he is just the same as me. I want him to do better than I did in
school. Can you help me?”

HOMEWORK CONCERNS
The jury is still out on the value of homework. As a matter
of fact, the views of parents, teachers and students vary widely on this
subject. The problem is that this is something that will not go away.
