We’re proud to be Eagles!
Valley View is a vibrant French Immersion school, where it’s
“Kids First”. We are extremely proud each year as our students win
awards in all aspects of school life. From volleyball to Science
Fair, track and field to Math Olympics, and Heritage Fair to poetry
writing, our Eagles have taken home awards competing against
students from all over the Greater Sudbury area.
Valley View is an established school in the community. It first
opened its doors in 1961, over 40 years ago. At that time, it was an
eight-room school with a gym, housing students in Grades 1 to 8. In
1969, the school was amalgamated into the Sudbury Board of
Education, and in 1975, it began to offer both the regular and
French Immersion programs. Two additions gave us a library,
kindergarten and four more classrooms. Valley View now boasts 14
classrooms from Grade 2 to 8, and a gym. It is situated on large
treed grounds with baseball and soccer fields, a basketball court
and a large play structure for our students to enjoy outdoors. There
is easy access to a large wooded area for nature walks in the fall
and spring, and snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in the winter.
The success of our school can be measured in terms of the
extraordinary achievement and positive experiences enjoyed by our
students. Wherever our students go, people comment on their
excellent behaviour. Valley View students are recognized as a force
to be reckoned with in academic and sporting competitions throughout
the Greater Sudbury area.
Demographics
Valley View is a French Immersion centre with 320 students in
Grades 2 to 8. Our average class size is just under 25. There are a
total of 18 students identified as exceptional, and 10 others who
have individual education plans with a modified program. Valley View
has a .25 resource teacher who works with these students and their
teachers.
New French Immersion School in Valley East
An exciting construction project is currently underway in the
growing community of Valley East - the first new school for Rainbow
District School Board in over 20 years. The new school, to be built
on the existing site of Valley View Public School, will house JK to
Grade 1 students from Val Caron Public School and Grade 2 to 8
students from Valley View Public School. The school will open in
September 2007 with a projected enrolment of 500 students in the
French Immersion program.
“The construction of a new school will have a positive impact on
learning and will benefit students in the area over the long term,”
said Board Chair Dena Morrison. “The age of the existing schools,
coupled with the large amount of capital required to renew the
facilities, made building new the best option for this expanding
community.” Val Caron Public School will close effective June 2007.
The new school will be barrier-free and have space for lower
class sizes in the primary grades as well as physical education,
instrumental music, visual arts, computer technology, a library and
special education. There will also be space for a before and after
school program and a full daycare in response to community needs.
“The building will be energy efficient and more cost-effective to
operate,” said Chair Morrison. “Any savings will be redirected to
other priorities within the system.” The new school will incorporate
national Go Green environmental certification principles, which take
into account industry ‘best practices’, including resource
consumption, waste management, building materials, interior
environment and occupant awareness. The goal is to create a
healthier, more energy-efficient building for students and staff.
Ameresco Canada will oversee the estimated $15 million
construction project on behalf of the Board. Rainbow District School
Board trustees approved a plan to finance the school at the regular
Board meeting held on June 12th, 2006 and reaffirmed their
commitment to pursue Ministry of Education funding for this
important initiative. |
