Whenever
Community Living Greater Sudbury moves into a new home, they like to throw
a house-warming party to say hello and begin to develop a strong
relationship with their new neighbours.
On
Monday,
March 27, 2006
, Matt Yuriy, President of CLGS was on hand
to cut the ribbon to officially open and bless their new house. With him,
as part of the official ceremony, were Board member, Sharon Kitching, on
the left, and Executive Director of CLGS, Deborah Sullivan. Several dozen
people dropped in during the evening to enjoy refreshments and a tour of
the newly renovated building which was once a duplex, but has now been
turned into one very large residence.
Once the furnishings are delivered, the
Carina Drive
property will be home to six adults who
are all in their 30’s and 40’s. Because of the fact that they all have
severe developmental challenges, they will be assisted in their daily
activities by four full-time staff during waking hours and two full-time
staff who will be on duty overnight. The staff will focus on helping each
of the residents learn how to become more independent and also facilitate
a variety of interaction and integration into the main-stream community of
Valley East
.
“The biggest goal of
the CLGS, and of the people living here, is to be validated as human
beings who are capable of making a positive contribution to society,”
explained Sullivan. “We feel that everybody has a right to a dignified
life.”
The mission statement says it all… “Community Living Greater
Sudbury/Integration Communautaires Grand Sudbury is committed to the goal
of assisting people who have a developmental disability to experience full
self-actualization. CLGS exists to assist people to live, work and
play as valued citizens in their home communities. Through our Day
Residential and Recreational supports, we aspire to provide a plan that is
individual tailored to the needs of the whole person.”
For over 40 years, Community Living Greater Sudbury has been
serving the
Valley East
and surrounding areas. Today, it is
responsible for programs throughout the entire City of
Greater Sudbury
. ‘Community Living’ is a National
program that started off as a results of parents advocating for services
for their adult-aged children. Today, it serves adults from the age of 18
to 95.
“Not everyone served
by CLGS requires the services of qualified staff,” explained Deborah as
she discussed the successful opening with Dorice Dusty, Public Relations Director of CLGS. . “Others with less
sever challenges are part of our Family Home Program and live with
families in the community in much the same way as foster children are
placed.
