Sudbury Employment Services, shown on the right in the photo,

were the special guests on The Learning Clinic which aired on

of employment agencies in society today. YMCA Sudbury
Employment Services is a not-for-profit organization, so it
differs slightly from private sector employment agencies,
however, both have the same ultimate mission of helping people
find meaningful employment in the workplace. It was clear from
the description of the services offered from the office that
this is a perfect starting point for anyone, young or old, who
is interested in finding a job today. Roni Sue is responsible
for assisting clients with everything from writing resumes to
arranging for interviews. You are encouraged to visit the web

year of the Sports and Physical Education Program at

that the girls under her care focus on self-development of
skills and attributes that can be used throughout their life
in all of their personal endeavours. By participating in the
pageant experiences, the girls have become more self-confident

Young
Community Leaders Report Provides Some Interesting Information
About Challenges Facing Young Volunteers |
|
|
Stephanie Chevrette,
Regional Co-ordinator of Young Community Leaders Report |
Angie Savoie and Caroline
Cisa-Pare
Volunteers with the Project |
Three special guests who are part
of a very important project taking place in Greater Sudbury
and North Bay were in attendance on The Learning Clinic on
Monday, November 16, 2009. Stephanie Chevrette, Regional Co-ordinator
of the Young Community Leaders Report was in the studio to
explain the purpose of the report and to go over the next
stages of the project which is a joint initiative of the
Sudbury YMCA and the Canadian Institute of Cultural Affairs.
"The purpose of the report was to get information from
young people about the barriers and obstacles they are facing
as well as the strengths and capacities that they have in
regards to being involved in the community," Stephanie
explained. Two volunteers with the project were also in
attendance to discuss their experiences. Angie Savoie, a
graduate of the School of Social Work at Laurentian University
described her volunteering efforts as extremely positive and
rewarding. In fact, she claims that it has been her
involvement in the project that has lead to her first full
time employment position as a Job Developer with the Sudbury
YMCA Employment Services division. Caroline Cisa-Pare, a 2nd
year student in the Biomed program at Laurentian feels that
her participation in the project will help her maintain a
connection with the community that will serve her well in any
career she pursues in medicine in the future. The report came
up with some interesting findings with respect to the top ten
issues facing youth in the city and also pointed out that over
84% of young people between the ages of 14 to 30 feel that
stress is a factor in their life at this time. For more
information about the report you can go to the following link:

Student
Council Representatives From Lockerby Composite Secondary
School Provide Listeners With Excellent Insight Into the
Importance of "Community" At The High School Level |
|
|
Connor Boyce, General
Member on the left;
Mark Mancini, President on the right. |
Sara Campbell, General
Member;
Chris MacCullough, Treasurer |
The Learning Clinic welcomed four
outstanding representatives of the Lockerby Composite
Secondary School Student Council as special guests on November
16, 2009. President, Mark Mancini, the articulate leader of
the Council demonstrated clearly why he has decided to pursue
a career in law. His poise and confidence were evident
throughout the entire evening. Other members of his Council in
attendance provided excellent answers to questions asked by
host, Robert Kirwan, and they too demonstrated passion and
commitment to their corresponding positions on this very
important governing body at their high school. Mark, who
is in Grade 12, indicated that one of the biggest challenges
facing high school students today is the need to make a
decision about their career goals. He explained that one is
constantly searching for that defining moment when you are
certain that you have finally made the right choice. Connor
Boyce, a Grade 11 student, stated that he found the biggest
challenge to be one of finding a "balance" between
social, academic, sports, relationships, work, etc. He said
that without maintaining a comfortable "balance" you
could find yourself in all kinds of trouble. Chris, another
Grade 11 student, felt that high school was all about
"transitions" and finding ways of making those
transitions effectively. The first transition is from
elementary to secondary school; then one goes from being a
confused Grade 9 student, to one who finds their place in the
school community by Grade 10 and 11; then one must prepare for
the quick transition from high school to post-secondary. He
says that you are constantly in transition and you must then
maintain balance while searching for that "defining
career choice". Sara, who is in Grade 10, shared that her
biggest challenge was in developing effective learning and
study habits so that she would be able to cope with the
academic challenges of maintaining high marks so that she
would be able to pursue the career goals she would be
establishing in the future. She agreed that the challenges of
transition, maintaining balance, and knowing that a decision
would soon be made about a career were all important, but for
her it was developing skills that she could use for the rest
of her life. All in all, it was a very informative evening
which provided all listeners with a great overview of what the
Lockerby community is all about.

Students
Encouraged To Identify A General Career Goal And Then Explore
Specific Disciplines Within That Career |
|
Kim St. Amour
Certified Athletic Therapist
& Acupuncturist CHRONIC
PAIN &
SPORTS CLINIC |
Kim St. Amour, a Certified Athletic
Therapist & Acupuncturist who operates a private practice
at 2140 Regent Street in Sudbury, was the special guest of The
Learning Clinic on Monday, November 23, 2009. Kim, who grew up
in Elliot Lake, provided listeners with some excellent insight
into the health discipline she has chosen as a career. She
explained how she decided at a young age to pursue a career in
health, but wasn't able to determine exactly which field of
practice to specialize in until after she obtained her degree
in Kinesiology at Laurentian University. Kim told us that she
took a year off to volunteer with a number of different
practitioners in the Kitchener area. It was during that time
that she decided that she wanted to be an Athletic Therapist.
Kim stated that she likes being around athletes, but that with
90% of her time spent in her clinic, she is finding that there
are so many people who suffer athletic injuries simply doing
normal everyday activities. She is able treat their injuries
using the same techniques that would be used on professional
athletes and she tries to create a "team like
ambience" where people can be treated in common rooms
with up to four other patients to talk to, or in private if
that is their wish. The field of Athletic Therapy is one that
is going to grow in the coming years as baby boomers enter a
"delayed senior" stage due to an increased activity
level that is allowed because of healthier lifestyle choices.
Kim feels that this would be an excellent career choice for
young people today. You can find out more about her practice
by going to her web site at www.atrc.ca

All students were in Grade 11: Austin Powell, Amanda
McCutcheon and Hannah Merchant. During the show they spoke
about how it was the death of three young teenagers in a
tragic accident in Valley East on June 21, 2009. Steven
Philippe (16) and Jazmine Houle (15), who both attended
Confederation secondary school, were walking along the side of
Hwy 69N in Hanmer with their friend, Caitlin Jelley (15), when
all three were killed by an impaired driver. Students at the
school have shown tremendous support for the activities being
organized by the OSAID group as the students try to raise
awareness among community members of the need for people to be
more sensible when it comes to driving while being impaired in
any way. They stated that while alcohol is often the root
cause of accidents where impairment is a factor, cell phones,
loud passengers, medication, and a long list of other things
that can reduce one's ability to focus on driving.

Andrea Ouellette, Grade 11, Elliott Tilleczek,
Grade 10 (standing), and Izzy Ahrbeck were the special guests on The Learning Clinic on
January 11, 2010. Andrea and Izzy are the two co-hosts of
"When There's Nothing Left To Burn", an increasingly
popular hour-long music radio show that they have been hosting
since November 2009. They became interested in putting on the
show when it was suggested that Andrea look into the
possibility by her teacher who was one time the Director of
the station. Now they play music that is not usually found on
"main-stream" radio every Monday evening from 4 to 5
p.m., just before The Learning Clinic which runs from 5 to 8
p.m. Elliott, who drops in from time to time to help out with
some of the "colour commentary", will be moving to
P.E.I. to complete the second semester of Grade 10. All three
students expressed interest in pursuing careers that are in
the entertainment, theatre or performing arts arena. They all
thoroughly enjoy doing the radio show which they say is
helping them develop transferable skills that will prove very

Mitch Ross
Shares Some Advice For Graduates Who Are Interested in
Travelling the Road of an Entrepreneur |
|
Mitch Ross, the founder and creative director
of OFF ROAD PRODUCTIONS, was the special guest of The Learning Clinic on
January 11, 2010. Mitch explained how he started out in the
world of business as the owner of a web design firm but soon
found himself expanding into
other areas of creative, technology and marketing based
fields. Now he has put all of his accumulated skills and
talents into a business that is capable of helping clients
meet a wide variety of needs. Mitch discussed some of the key
characteristics a person needs when choosing the path of
entrepreneurship to fulfil his/her life goals and ambitions.
The rapid advances being made in technology will "open
the doors to so many opportunities" according to Mitch.
Statistics show that more and more people are joining the
ranks of the self-employed, most by choice, but some out of
necessity. With large employers cutting back on staff, many
young people have discovered that it is easier to get into
short term contracts with several businesses rather than
waiting until you find that perfect full-time
job.
If you have any questions about business in general, Mitch
invites you to contact him through his web site which can be

Larry
Berrio Co-Hosts THE LEARNING CLINIC Three-Hour Live Talk Radio Show With Robert Kirwan
on February 8, 2010 |
|
|
Larry
Berrio, a resident of Valley East and who is recognized as one
of Sudbury's most exciting performers in the music industry,
shown in front of his decorated truck on the right, was the co-host of a special 3-hour live
talk radio show on Laurentian University's CKLU 96.7 FM on
February 8, 2010. The
program is called THE
LEARNING CLINIC and is on every Monday from 5 p.m. to 8
p.m. It is hosted and produced by Robert Kirwan, Publisher of
Valley East Today and owner of The
Greater Sudbury Learning Clinic, his private practice as
an Education, Training and Career Planning Consultant. Kirwan
is shown on the left.
Berrio welcomed the opportunity to do the show with Kirwan,
only two days after the official launch of his new video,
"Rock Town", which was released during a grand
ceremony at Science North on February 5, 2010. The launch was
attended by 350 people, all who were there to celebrate the
launch of the video ROCK TOWN which was dedicated to all
miners and people working in the mining industry.
Kirwan first met Larry Berrio in June 1997, just before he
released his very first CD, "Living A Dream"
which was the start of his career as country music
entertainer. Before that, Larry was the owner of a company
called "Larry's Graphics". Music was a part-time job
until he released "Living A Dream". A
copy of The Vision Paper which carried the article, can be
found at the end of this article.
During
the radio show, Larry Berrio shared his life story with
listeners and explained what young people can expect if they
want to follow his path in the entertainment industry. THE
LEARNING CLINIC is a program that provides students and
parents with information that may help them in making
important life decisions with respect to education and career
development. In addition to bringing in groups of students
from area secondary schools, Kirwan also invites people such
as Larry Berrio to appear on the show to talk about some of
the challenges and offer some suggestions regarding their own
careers.
During the show on Monday, February 8, 2010, Larry Berrio
talked about how his new video was produced, explaining how he
was able to secure funding from supportive people in the
Greater Sudbury Area. He also played his hit song, "Rock
Town", and explained the story behind that recording.
Rock Town is expected to be extremely popular with the over 2
million people across the country who are involved in the
mining industry.
Berrio also announced that he will be the
"headliner" at the Knights of Columbus Country Fair
which is held every July at the K of C fair grounds in Hanmer.
For now, he will be doing an extensive "radio tour"
across the country promoting his CD, RPM.
Jeff Sheppard, Larry's manager who resides in Kitchener,
was also called during the show. He explained some of the
plans that are in place for the spring and summer as they get
ready for a major awards show that Larry will be playing at
this summer. The show will be broadcast across the country and
will give Berrio the exposure he needs to take his career
"over the top".
Larry Berrio has been compared by many as a "younger
Garth Brooks". He has a passion for entertaining live at
concerts and outdoor festivals, and still gets a rush when he
has a chance to play in one of the country bars in Sudbury or
across the country. "I love being close to the fans, and
you really get close to them in a bar. The fans just love
being able to talk to Larry following the show and he always
finds time to speak to them and make them feel special. Larry
also explained why he deliberately selected ten songs for his
new CD that are all fast-paced. He stated that he wanted to be
able to perform every one of his songs live on stage. He said
that when people come out to a show they want to see a
high-energy entertainer. They don't come out for slow songs.
Larry
gives a lot of credit for his success in the music business to
his parents, Oliver and Judy Barriault, of Val Caron. Oliver
was interviewed over the phone during the show and expressed
his pride in what his son has been able to do. Oliver worked
his entire career with Inco, so he was especially thrilled
when Rock Town came out. "Larry's song really captures
what it means to be a miner. There is nothing like the camaraderie
you find with a group of miners. It is something that this
city was built upon and it is what newcomers notice the most.
The people here care for each other and welcome you with open
arms."
If you missed the show, you can download the entire three
hours by going to the archive section of www.cklu.ca
Select February 8 from the calendar and put in the starting
time as 17:15 ( which is 5:15 p.m. using the 24 hour clock).
Put 180 minutes as the duration and save the show as an mp3
file on your computer. You can then play it with your media
player.
It has been a long, hard road for the past 12 years for
Larry Berrio. He now has his second CD under his belt, a
fantastic video, and has also produced the theme song for a
national hunting show called, "In The Rough" which
is carried by Global every Sunday morning. The theme song of
the same name is also on his new CD, RPM.

Young
Students From E.S.C. l'Horizon Complete Project To Denounce
Violence Against Women & Children |
|
|
Christine Rivest
(Gr. 11);
Gabrielle Veilleux (Gr. 11) |
Mme Cecile Lariviere-Leduc
(Teacher) |
Christine Rivest and Gabrielle
Veilleux are two of a group of Grade 11 students who completed
a special project for their Religious Studies program this
year. The project was designed to commemorate the 20th
Anniversary of the Montreal Massacre of 14 students in 1989.
Part of their project included putting up a display at the
Hanmer Valley Shopping Centre on December 6, 2009, the day of
the Montreal Massacre, and another part of the project was
taking part in an interview on THE LEARNING CLINIC on Monday,
March 8, 2010, International Women's Day. They were the 5 p.m.
guests along with their teacher, Mme Cecile Lriviere-Leduc,
the Pastoral Leader of the school and a teacher of Religious
Studies and Business. Host Robert Kirwan discussed a wide
variety of issues including the state of violence among young
people today. It was pointed out that abuse comes in all kinds
of shapes and forms, with each young person feeling their own
particular kind of pain when those around them are insensitive
to their feelings. The girls felt that they did make a
difference with their project and hope that both students and
adults who heard their presentation will change any behaviour
which may intentionally or unintentionally hurt someone else.
Gabrielle and Christine plan on continuing the group project
again next year while in Grade 12.

Lockerby
Composite Secondary School Student Council Members Talk About
Their Winter and Spring Activities |
|
|
Vanessa Smith (Gr.
10);
Laura Penny (Gr. 12) |
Mark Mancini (Gr. 12) |
Three members of the Lockerby
Composite Secondary School Student Council, Vanessa Smith
(General Member), Laura Penny (Vice President), and Mark
Mancini (President), were special guests of THE LEARNING CLINIC on Monday,
March 8, 2010 during the 6 p.m. to 7:40 p.m. time slot. The
three discussed the activities that have been organized by the
Student Council during the winter months and talked about what
is coming up at Lockerby for the balance of the school year.
Host Robert Kirwan was quite interested in what the students
had to say about their school community and the role of the
Student Council in helping to build up and maintain the spirit
in the school so that everyone can get the most out of their
high school experiences. All of the students felt that the
time and energy involved in working with the Student Council
is well worth the effort and they couldn't imagine not being
involved in the school in this capacity. They feel that it is
important for students to get involved in as many
extracurricular activities as they can handle so that they
develop relationships and skills that they can use for the
rest of their life. Vanessa is in Grade 10 and is looking
forward to being on Council for another two years. Mark and
Laura are both in Grade 12 and will be graduating at the end

young performers discussed how they each became interested in
acting. They also shared some of their feelings about
overcoming their shyness and becoming comfortable with
performing live in front of audiences. In addition, we talked
to the students about their future aspirations with respect to
pursuing a career in theatre or as a performing artist.
All-in-all, it was a very informative exchange of information
which should prove very useful for anyone thinking of joining
a community theatre group that operates in the City of Greater
Sudbury.
