10th Annual Basketball Tournament Will Be One Of The Biggest Sporting Events Held In Valley East This Year

The Rainbow-Catholic Co-Ed Elementary Basketball Tournament is jointly sponsored by the Rainbow District School Board and the Sudbury Catholic District School Board.  This year the tournament will be held from April 18 to 22.

The event is divided up into two age categories. One of the divisions is for teams consisting of players from Grades 5 and 6. The other is for teams from Grades 7 and 8. This year a total of at least 32 teams are expected to enter the tournament. All of the final championship games will be played at Confederation Secondary School in Val Caron.

It is the organizing committee's goal to emphasize a well-rounded, positive student that strives to be successful both in academics and extra-curricular activities.  The belief is that through extra-curricular activities, such as sporting events, students learn to become active participants in their community.  Hence, the purpose of the tournament is to encourage equitable participation and fair play of both boys and girls in sporting events.

Algonquin Public School won the Gold Medal in the Grade 5/6 Division in 2005 with a 29 to 26 victory over St. David School . Carl A. Nesbitt Public School took the Gold Medal in the Grade 7/8 Division with a 51 to 29 win over Landsdowne.

Last year, Valleyview Public School was the most successful school from Valley East and Capreol, eventually being edged out in the Grade 5/6 Consolation Medal game by a score of 41 to 36 by Adamsdale. This year, we are looking forward to a much better showing from our local schools and are encouraging spectators to get out and cheer on their favourite teams.
