Although
the picture shows the smiling faces of the members of the winning
blooperball team, Ronald McDonald House was the big winner at the 2nd
Annual Charity Blooperball Tournament hosted by Confederation Secondary
School on Wednesday, May 16th.
Each year the students of the OAC Physical Education class, with
the guidance of their teacher, Ms. Laura Aubertin, organize a special
event to raise money for a specific charity. This year, the chosen
charity was the Ronald McDonald House.
The members of the class are Vikki Healey, Melanie McCann,
Kristen Sturgeon, Kristina Rossi, Jessica Gervais, Aaron Pike, Christine
Hardy, Stephanie Linney, Lindsay Lemieux, Andrew Ellerton, Audrey
Kenwell, and co-chairs Jodie Merrill and Katie Edmunds.
The day was an enormous success thanks to the
diligent work of the entire class, the volunteers and the local
sponsors. This year the
class raised $1 177.36 which will be presented to the Ronald Mcdonald
House at Confederation’ Year-end Awards Assembly.
Six teams, consisting of 10 to 15 Confederation
students, paid $50 to play. The
Confederation teachers added to the money raised by setting an amount of
money to be donated by each of their classes.
When the class reached their predetermined goal, the students
were allowed to watch and cheer for the teams in the tournament.
On the day of the tournament, the OAC Physical
Education class arrived early to begin setting up the fields. The students were responsible for the barbecue, selling
refreshments, and selling tickets for door prizes. Other tasks included score keeping, posting the results and
keeping the games on schedule. The
class would like to thank the volunteer umpires and scorers: Paul Simon,
Remington Huneault and Braydon Carbone, Bryce Babcock Remore, Taylor
Shonwise, Tyler Samson, and Shawna Rowlands.
Congratulations goes out to the members of the
Chiefs who won the championship by defeating the Baby Jays in the final
game: Tom VanDrunen, Brent Verdiel, Travis Babe, Stephane Ethier, Scott
Ransom, Wade Verdiel, Eric Goode, Mark Mayotte, Steve Wuksinic, Caleb
Friday, Amber Tucker, Lisa Jones, Sarah Radunsky and Jen Zymantas.
A special thanks goes to all the sponsors:
Cambrian Ford Superstore, Canadian Mortgage Housing Company (CMHC),
Kelsey’s, Val Caron I.D.A pharmacy, Val Caron Tim Horton’s, Garson
Foodland, and McDonald’s Corporation.
Part of the event included door prizes which were donated by
these local sponsors. A
great amount of money was also raised through the sale of hotdogs,
drinks, and freezies, which were donated by Moncion’s Independent
Grocer.
The class would also like to thank Valley East
Slo-Pitch for donating all of the equipment and the Greater City of
Sudbury for providing us with prepared fields at the Confederation
diamond and on the school soccer field.
A final thank you goes to Confederation
Secondary School staff and students for supporting our class, the
tournament and the Ronald McDonald house. Also, we would like to
thank Ms. Aubertin. Without
her assistance, this event would
not have been possible.
