Dystonia
is a neurological disorder of the muscles for which there is no known
cause or cure. The only hope for people afflicted with this disease is
that researchers will make a break-through and come up with a way of
battling this ailment. And the only way researchers will be able to do
this is through the fund-raising efforts of the 110 local Chapters
throughout North America. Mary
Guy, Support Group Leader for the Sudbury Chapter of the International
Dystonia Association, is once again reaching out to the communities of
Valley East and Capreol for help. The 4th Annual Dystonia Walk ‘n
Wheel will be held on Sunday, June 10. Registrations will be taken at
the Howard Armstrong Recreation Centre and the walk will take place
between 10 a.m. and 12 noon. Last year a total of 80 people took part in
the event which involves a 4 mile walk. In the event of rain, the walk
will take place inside. During
the first three years, a total of almost $17,000 has been raised at this
function, making the Sudbury Chapter the leader in the entire province
for fund-raising through the Walk ‘n Wheel event. According
to Mary, “We may be small in numbers, but we more than make up for it
in hard work. People like Gerry Chenier, from Hanmer, are dedicated to
the success of the group.” The
‘Walk ‘n Wheel’ will only succeed if there are walkers and
pledges. If you are interested in taking part or at least in donating a
pledge, please contact Gerry Chenier at 969-4342, or Mary Guy at
673-1101 during the day and 524-0606 in the evening. All
of the money raised will be used for dystonia medical research. Food and
refreshments will be available for participants following the walk. |
