Election 2000 Is Coming Fast Make Sure You Keep Informed

Perhaps it is because of the Presidential Elections in the United States. Perhaps it is because we are being amalgamated into the Greater City of Sudbury. Perhaps it is because people are so fed up with politics that they are trying to put it out of their mind. Whatever the reason, there has been very little said about the first ever municipal elections held under the umbrella of our newly restructured City.

Nevertheless, whether we want it or not, the elections will be held on November 13, 2000, and we had better be ready!

At the time of writing this article, six people had already declared their intention to run for the two councillor positions in Ward 3, which contains the majority of the community of Valley East and a small portion of the north end of Sudbury. Those candidates included (in alphabetical order) Nicky Doyon, Ron Dupuis, Marc Landry, Joe Niceforo, Louise Portelance and Leonard Zivny. Nominations close on October 13.

In an effort to help voters find out more about the candidates, The Vision Paper has created a special site on our web site called Elections 2000. Candidates have been given space on which to introduce themselves to the public, identify some of their platform and even answer questions sent to them by ratepayers. Readers are invited to visit our web site on a regular basis in order to see what is being posted by the candidates. Email some questions and we will put them up so that you can get some idea of where the aspiring politicians sit with respect to the issues of the day.

We will also be inviting submissions from Ward 4 and the candidates for the position of Regional Mayor. This space if being provided free of charge by The Vision Paper. It is hoped that candidates will take advantage of this opportunity to reach the people who will be voting on election day.

The site also includes some general information for voters.
