Valley East Waves Swimmers Go For Pink

At the recent Olympics the preoccupation for all concerned seemed to be “Going for Gold”.  The Valley East Waves swimmers were no exception at the recent swim meet held at the Laurentian pool.  The swimmers competed very well and although they don’t compete for gold at this level plenty of other coloured ribbons were won.  However, one of our swimmers was racing for a ribbon of it different colour.  Pink.  Her mother had promised to donate one dollar for every second she shaved off her personal times.  The money she earned it would be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society as part of the National Breast Cancer Awareness Week.  The young lady earned and nice contribution for a very worthy cause.  Coach Leger heard about this effort and promptly organized a campaign for other parents to emulate the pledge.  A pledge sheet is available for signature at the Valley East Sports Complex.  Judging by the number of swimmers who lowered their personal best the Canadian Society will receive a sizable donation at month end.  The swim club is sustained by various fund-raising projects supported by the community and by specific donations made by corporate sponsors.  On behalf of the Northern Ontario Swimming Association the club took great pleasure in presenting a plaque to the Valley Plaza I.D.A. in recognition of their generous support to the club over the last three years.

The club also relies very heavily on volunteer activity.  The NOSA and Swim Ontario honoured Lina Lacroix at a presentation ceremony for her 15 years of volunteer work with the club.
