Record Breaking Performance Featured At 'AAA' Midget Golf Tournament

Playing conditions couldn’t have been better for the 2nd Annual Valley East Consbec ‘AAA’ Midget Golf Tournament held on August 12 at the Clearview Golf & Country Club. The sun was out, the temperature was in the mid-20's and there was no wind to contend with as 141 golfers, on 36 teams, took to the course to compete for bragging rights for the next 12 months. When the final scores were turned in, the team of Stacy Levac, Marty Kirwan, Todd Newell, and Bob Kirwan, shown from left to right in the front row of the photo above, had utilized a balanced attack of enormous drives and a precision short game to arrive at an incredible total of 14-under par, 58 for the day. They emerged as the top guns by a margin of 3 strokes over their nearest competitors.

On the shot-gun start, the winning team began at the 3rd hole and as they teed up six holes later on hole #9, they were only 1 under par. However, Newell put his drive on the green and putted in for an eagle; Marty Kirwan put his drive on #10 on the green and came out with a birdie; an eagle on #11 and the squad was on its way to destroying the back nine with a record-setting score of 10 under par - a string of eight birdies and one eagle over the nine holes.

Ken Neufeld, a member of the other group playing against the winning team, commented, "I have never seen anything like it. They were definitely in the zone today and couldn’t do anything wrong. It was something to see!"

The second place team, with a score of 11 under par, 61, consisted of Denis Beskorowany, Rick Sequin, Mike Marleau and Dan Bizier. One stroke behind them, at 62, were Ed Paquette, Rod Lapointe, Lee Hope, and Richard Huneault, who managed a hole-in-one on the par 4, 15th hole.

On the Ladies’ side, Jil Condie, Carmen Taus, Jose Belanger and Luce Lynch turned in a round of 78 to take top honours by two strokes over the team of Nicole Beskorowany, Ginette Paquette, Michelle Bizier and Sandra Paquette. Third place went to Gabby Laberge, Darlene Lafrance, Linda Adler and Bev Sabourin.

The Long Drive Constest was won by Brian Beaupre for the men and Ginette Paquette for the ladies. Denis Laberge and Marg Howe won their respective closest to the pin contests. Dan and Michelle Biziere each won the closest to the line challenge.

All-in-all it was a great day of golf and fund-raising for the ‘AAA’ Midgets who took to the ice on August 14 for training camp in preparation for another season of competition.
